Ontario Health Insurance Plan
As of September 1, 2023, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) updated coverage for different eye exams. Patients ages 20—64 with certain sight-threatening conditions may receive annual comprehensive exams and up to 2 follow-up partial eye exams.
Kids Eye Care Coverage: OHIP provides comprehensive eye exam coverage for individuals age 19 and younger, permitting 1 annual OHIP-insured exam. Additionally, partial exams addressing specific eye or vision issues are covered. However, OHIP does not cover second opinions from different optometrists.
Adult Eye Care Coverage: OHIP covers annual eye exams for those aged 20—64 with specific sight-threatening conditions. These include diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts (if surgery is needed), and more. Patients can have 2 follow-up partial exams annually. Adult strabismus (crossed eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye) are no longer included in OHIP-insured exams.
Senior Eye Care Coverage: Patients 65+ years of age are eligible for OHIP-covered comprehensive eye exams every 12—18 months based on sight-threatening conditions like diabetes, glaucoma, and more. Those without these conditions can get OHIP-covered exams every 18 months. If needed, seniors can also have up to 2 OHIP-covered partial exams, such as eye pressure checks.

How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?
Regular eye exams are essential for everyone. Here are some general guidelines by age group:
Infants (0-1 years old): a first exam can start as early as 6 mths so the Dr can check for diseases of infancy and ensure there is no large vision correction required in one or both eyes.
Youth (1—19 years old): Annually.
Adults (20—64 years old): Every 2 years.
Seniors (65+ years old): Annually ( Please be advised, OHIP now only covers every 18 months.)
If you have certain health conditions like diabetes, more frequent eye exams may be recommended. Learn more about our specialized diabetic eye exams.
When Do Children Need Eye Exams?
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends:
A comprehensive exam to establish a baseline between the ages of 6 and 9 months.
Another comprehensive exam as they grow and develop between the ages of 2 and 5.
Annual, comprehensive exams from age 6 and continuing until adulthood.
Proper vision can be beneficial for your child’s success—in life and in academics. Beyond just seeing what’s in front of them at school, visual skills are needed for social, cognitive, and motor skill development.
Focusing on Your Family
Children’s Eye Exams
It’s never too early to focus on your children’s eye health and vision. Their sense of sight is important at every age and every stage of development.
Our optometrists are experienced with children and can put them at ease. Many kids even think their eye exams are fun! And, if your child does need glasses, we offer a wide selection of colours and styles that will make them smile. We can also help address common vision concerns in children, like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes). Book their appointment today to help set them up for success—and a lifetime of healthy vision.
Children aren’t born with the visual skills they need—they develop them over time. Good visual skills can help set your child up for success. Whether it’s reading, interacting with other kids, throwing a ball around outside, or seeing what the teacher writes on the board, eyesight is involved.
Children who start school with undiagnosed vision problems may struggle to keep up in class. They may be misdiagnosed with ADHD or another behavioural disorder.
There are many milestones in a baby’s visual progression. Here’s what to expect at some important stages:
Birth to 1 Month: Your baby should be staring at bright lights or faces, albeit for a short period.
1 to 3 Months: They’ll begin to look toward sounds and follow objects horizontally.
3 to 5 Months: Babies begin to reach for objects and see differences between colours.
5 to 7 Months: Hand-eye coordination will begin to develop, and your baby should start looking at distant objects.
7 to 12 Months: Depth perception, focusing, and other visual skills should be developed, and your baby might begin to copy facial expressions they see.
As children get older, you can help encourage their healthy visual development by playing look-and-find games like Where’s Waldo, doing word searches and maze games together, and limiting their screen time.
To help your child develop healthy visual skills, be sure to bring them in for comprehensive eye exams.
How Do I Know If My Child Needs Glasses?
If they are experiencing a vision issue, children are often unable to articulate the problem—they might not even know there is a problem. Unlike adults, children have not established a baseline of what proper vision looks like for them.
Kids can experience signs or symptoms that may not seem visual—like tiredness, poor concentration, or difficulty keeping their place while reading. They may develop vision problems standard glasses can’t correct alone, like strabismus (eye-turn) or amblyopia (lazy eye), which can affect how their vision develops.
Bringing your child for regular eye exams lets us establish that baseline so we take the time to evaluate their symptoms. By detecting vision problems early on, we can give them appropriate support—whether they need glasses or other personalized care. Book their appointment today!
Clear, Comfortable Vision
Contact Lens Exams and Fittings
Contact lenses give you the option to go glasses-free for sports, fashion, or just because you want to. With education and support, even kids can wear contacts safely. If you’ve ever been curious about contact lenses, we can help you explore your options. Our experienced team offers professional fittings, all the training you need to insert and remove your lenses with ease, and a variety of lens types to suit many prescriptions and lifestyles.
If you experience any discomfort while wearing your contacts, don’t wait until your exam time comes up on the calendar. Many people who experience discomfort give up on wearing lenses without looking for an alternative option. Dry eye is a common reason for people to go back to glasses. But we can help you find another style of lens or a dry eye treatment to keep you wearing contacts comfortably.
Regular exams are also important for keeping your prescription up-to-date and your vision sharp. If you have a current prescription and just need a refill, you can order your contact lenses online or come in and see us! Getting started with contact lenses is easy—book your fitting today !
A contact lens prescription differs from your regular eyewear prescription. After all, contact lenses sit directly on the cornea.
When you book a contact lens exam, we will evaluate your overall eye health to determine which lenses are best for your eyes. We’ll take some measurements so we get the sizing right too. During the exam, we’ll discuss your lifestyle, vision needs, and your expectations from contact lens wear.
Maybe you’re someone who only wants to wear contact lenses on special occasions. Or perhaps you’re a busy parent with a jam-packed bedtime routine who doesn’t have the time to clean and put away the same pair of lenses every night.
No matter your situation, we’ll take the time to listen to your needs and find the right lens fit for you.
Contact lenses sit directly on the cornea, so you’ll need to follow your optometrist’s instructions carefully. Serious infections can be associated with contact lens wear, so hygiene is of the utmost importance. Kids and teens looking for easier lens care may prefer disposable soft contact lenses. These lenses are worn once, so there are no extra steps to disinfect or store the lenses.
Contact lens wearers of all ages can prevent infections by doing the following:
Remove your lenses before you go to sleep.
Book annual, comprehensive eye exams to monitor how your eyes are adjusting to your lenses.
Don’t shower, use a hot tub, or go swimming while wearing contact lenses.
Replace and care for your lenses by following your optometrist’s instructions.
If you have lenses that need to be cleaned, only use the recommended contact lens solution—never tap water.
Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly before inserting or removing lenses.
Recent studies suggest that 1 in 3 Canadians lives with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Diabetes can impact your overall health and your vision along with it.
Many people are aware of how diabetes impacts overall health but don’t always consider its ocular impacts—diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in adults.
People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at an increased risk of developing vision problems. We recommend that kids and adults with diabetes have annual, comprehensive eye exams. Taking a proactive approach to health is important, especially if you’re dealing with diabetes.
If you have diabetes, getting your eyes examined regularly can help protect your sight. Close examination of the retina can help to detect any early signs of serious vision problems. Book regular diabetic eye exams to protect your family’s eye health.
Diabetes is a disease that impacts the production of insulin, a hormone that regulates your body’s blood sugar levels.
When you eat, most of your food is broken down into glucose (sugar) and travels through the bloodstream. An increase in the amount of sugar in the bloodstream signals the pancreas to release insulin, which in turn lets the sugar into your cells. If you have diabetes, your body either does not make insulin or doesn’t use it properly. Over time, elevated blood sugar levels can lead to various health issues, including vision problems. Even if you don’t notice any change in your vision, it’s still important to have your eyes examined regularly. Book your appointment today.
Diabetes can lead to serious vision problems and even blindness, so it’s important to book an annual eye exam to check for any changes. Visual issues caused by diabetes may include conditions like blurry vision, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema.
Blurry Vision: Your body adjusting to diabetes medication or changes in your health routine can lead to blurry vision. Elevated blood sugar can lead to a buildup of fluid in the eyes and cause the eye’s lens to swell. Normally, the extra fluid is temporary, and your eyes will return to normal as your blood sugar stabilizes. But you should still visit your optometrist to rule out more serious issues.
Diabetic Retinopathy: Diabetic retinopathy often progresses slowly and may not present visible symptoms until irreversible vision loss occurs. The blood vessels in your retina swell as blood sugar levels elevate. In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, blurry vision is a common symptom. As the condition progresses, it gets more serious. Blood vessels break and bleed, leaking into the macula and causing vision loss.
Diabetic Macular Edema: Diabetic macular edema occurs when the macula swells. The macula is responsible for your central vision, so impairment can impact the ability to read, write, drive, and recognize faces. This condition is quite serious and can lead to blindness.
